@xris,

For sure, friend.

Wow,

The purpose of this observance is to increase awareness, disseminate information and (in some cases) raise funds for various environmental initiatives. It's not designed to solve anything; isn't intended to 'fix the planet' or anything of the sort.

Whether or not its doing anything is up for grabs, but I've found that the more people are aware of the facts in any situation, the more likely they are to give *it* their everyday attention. More attention to the problems facing our planet is a good idea in any context.

I guess I'm just unsure how this sort of thing is cause for anger or disgust.

Thanks

We had enough "raising awareness", "attention" and gestures. By now people should know the story.
This is nothing more than repetition of a lie for the sake of making it the truth.
Nobody cares about the facts, why else was Monckton barred from speaking before congress. Because they didn't want to hear what he had to say.

Read the links..It may take a while this is science not individuals distorting little hiccups in previous weather patterns or choosing to pick on the green extremists exaggerations.Distorting or denying will not give you the real truth.
So the democrats want to hear their boy speak, it maybe wrong but it does not make me concede the debate is won.Would Al be invited to an oil companies propaganda debate? they have organised plenty in the past. The oil companies have tried fooling us on more than one occasion by lying about what support they had from scientists.

The US government is not a lobby group. It is supposed to find the truth, not support one side.

Dos you listen to the rest of it, the warming because of solar activity before the industrial revolution?

@EmperorNero,
"The prime minister of France said three years ago that he hoped that the united nations climate panel would become a fledgling world government. And you can bet that what he meant by world government would not be any kind of democratic government. The global warming thing is a bid by the political class worldwide, and in particular the left leaning political class, the bureaucrats, the politicians, the waxmen, the Marxists, the Obamas, to take over absolute control of the way our lives are run. They want to tell us what lightbulbs we can have, whether or not we can have an auto and how far we can drive it, what kind of electricity we can have, whether we can have a windmill slicing the birds out of the sky like we now have all over Scotland. They want to micro-manage every aspect of our lives with an authoritarian, totalitarian centralist state."

We haven't had enough. Unless and until habits, consumption and attitude can better realign themselves with the resources and fragility of our world, it won't ever be enough. I realize its going to torque some people off; I understand that, I get it. Unfortunately the stakes are too high to stay silent in the hope of not offending someone.

What damage we've done and what good we can do isn't a "lie". The fact that our resources, our air and the viability of our atmosphere isn't a "lie" either. I can appreciate one getting tired of being told "its our fault", but often the truest facts hurt; and only the constant attention to what needs be done is left of our hope in a future world.

But that is the way science works. Scientists form hypotheses, they run their experiments, collect data, analyze it, and then postulate theories if the evidence seems to confirm the original hypothesis, or the hypothesis is reformed and more experiments are run, until theories are formed to be tested. Because different scientists have different backgrounds, and the environment is such a complex system, not all are going to agree on what is absolutely going on.

In other words, its not that all of this "environmental stuff" is unknowable, it is that it is an extremely complex system that very small fluctuations, can cause major changes within the system. Thus, it may appear that this stuff is unknowable, but instead, as more knowledge is gained, the explanations change.

This is how it worked with global warming: There is a political goal, politicians pay scientists come up with a theory that would demand solutions that support the political goal. The scientists construct material to support their theory. The politicians incentivise and pressure other scientists into supporting the theory and producing more material. They declare consensus and all counter-evidence is dismissed as funded by the oil lobby.

If there was enough awareness of our environmental plight, you would not see people throwing garbage out of their car window. People should know the story, but they don't, people like Lord Monckton.

Besides, awareness is not the only aim of Earth Day. Earth Day is also a day for people to go out and take action, plant a tree, pick up garbage, or finally organize that car pool.

EmperorNero wrote:

Which assumes that the vast majority of scientists are liars and frauds. Needless to say, that's an unnecessarily nasty assumption to make about people you do not know.

EmperorNero wrote:

And why should they want to hear what he has to say? This whack-job has compared science on global warming to Hitler's eugenics program.

Besides, Lord Monckton is not the man to ask when you want scientific information: if you want to know something about science, you ask a scientists, not a silver-spoon fed English nobleman with no expertise in the field.

How come the wacky carbon causing warming stuff isn't a conspiracy theory? Name a scientific truth that needed to be backed up by the claim of consensus.

Making the US shut down it's economy, the politicians controlling our lives. In short: implementing Marxism!
And of course profit for environmental groups and Al Gore's carbon credit and science fiction movie business.

Please don't call authoritarianism Marxism? That's not what Karl Marx had in mind when he spoke of communism. So global warming is going to give the politicians an excuse to shut down the economy and control our lives, huh? Conspiracy theorists have been talking about this for a long time and everytime one of the predictions don't happen they find another prediction to salvage their paranoia. Be careful with that paranoia. It can give the politicians an excuse to run your life.

Most research on climate and the environment is done by professors and research scientists at universities. Politics has very little to do with scientists work. Sure, many are dependent on funding from the government for their work, but they are not bought off by politicians. On the other hand, scientists are bought off by private interests that want "science" to confirm what they need to protect their own selfish interest.

Anyway, there is not a consensus on what is actually happening or will happen in the future, just a general agreement on the fact that something is happening, and it is likely to be negative as far as humanity is concern. In more cases that not, the absolute deniers in the science community are in fact funded by the oil and coal industry.

Alrighty, then authoritarianists, who are falsely self-proclaimed Marxists.

On the strength of phony science, the federal government would still be willing to impose new taxes on energy consumption, cut economic growth, reduce our standard of living, and create bookshelves filled with new regulation governing most facets of the lives of Canadians.

In another statement quoted by the Herald, Ms. Stewart gave another reason for adopting the religion of global warming. 'Climate change [provides] the greatest chance to bring about justice and equality in the world.' Here she gets closer to the core motivation of some of the leading global warming activists. Where socialism's attempt at a global redistribution of wealth ended in economic catastrophe, global warming is being wheeled in as the next new economic crusade.

How come all the global warming critics are fired or moved to smaller offices while making up any silly story on global warming gets you the grants?

Did you read that article and its links?Tell me why the uk with so many coal powered stations wants to hear about the effect it is having on the environment?sorry but your story does not add up.Every government is trying to avoid its obligation to stop green house gasses. Its the last thing they want to hear. The only ones that are objecting to these fact are those who will loose out, oil companies etc.

Politicians are always extremely receptive to alarmist news.

Any chance to portray themselves as proactive saviors will be greeted and encouraged by politicians, whether to promote some tangential agenda or just to score political points.

People have a tendency to look at extreme phenomena and think that there must be some conscious planning behind it, and then either accept some extreme explanation or reject reality because the only explanation they would accept seems too extreme.

My point isn't to say that global warming isn't a problem. I simply wish to point out that a false global warming consensus isn't necessarily dependent upon a grand conspiracy. It is simply hard to trust scientific truth in realms where politicians and academia want a certain point of view to be true. Support is often cherry picked, and dissent is often marginalized.

Universities bend themselves up like pretzels to secure government and private funding and the money follows from interests that are almost never motivated by the quest for truth.

I worked for a university health research center, and they did not look for ways to provide any utility through their work, they looked tirelessly for the way to secure the next grant to keep their salaries.

Why can't people be cynical enough to distrust ALL authority. It seems people are either ready to put the whole of their trust in business or put the whole of their trust in government. They are both out to screw you.
