.5 in binary = 1/10 ?

I can't think of any rational numbers that wouldn't be translatable to base 2. 2 is a factor of all even numbers, and all odd numbers are only a unit away from an even number, right? If I understand correctly, a rational number is one that can be put into a fraction, so we don't even have to mess with "decimal" points.

Rational numbers as numbers that make sense, I thought. I'll go look it up.
Irrational numbers as numbers like pi or the square root of 2

Well, it's about the same thing. But technically, it's the ratio/fraction idea.

Indeed, except that pi is also transcendental, whereas the square root of 2 is just irrational. And this is because the square root of two is an algebraic expression with a finite number of operations. (In this case, one). Pi can't be written so simply, to say the least. It's a strange number, this mother of curves.
