@3k1yp2,
I was into art in a big way in secondary school, but gave it all up to go to university and study to become a journalist, but always told myself that I would pick up a paintbrush again during my spare time. I haven't yet.

I used to paint really weird and surreal things with hands, eyes and random objects all over the shop. My main inspiration was Salvador Dali.

I'm much more into literature and such now, instead of painting, but I do still sketch things every so often.

@G-Thomson,
My wife is quite an accomplished painter, well if you consider being in demand in Local Galleries accomplished. She is teaching me to paint, although I have no knack for her realist style, I quite enjoy my mixed media messes.

@3k1yp2,
I've supplemented my income for the last 15 years or so doing freelance photography as well as creating and selling surrealist computer art.

I'm currently trying to teach myself to oil paint. Most of the time I am succeeding only in creating green mud. Anyone who has tried plein air painting will know what I mean by that, I think.

I'm mostly interested in surrealism (especially Rene Magritte and Yves Tanguy) and abstract expressionism.

@sometime sun,
So I am attempting to pick up a mixed media sort of thing to make up for my poor shadowing skills. Mixed Photograph/Paint/hand dyed fabric/and of all things colored duct tape. I figure what the heck, if I have no painting talent, I can fake it. Besides I have always been drawn to the more abstract. My favorite paintings are by Piet Mondrian and they are mostly straight lines and squares.

Art is not a general thing i would hazard to say, pick a subject and sit with it and for it.
My personal favourite and who i sat for today, will be different by tomorrow, is Toulouse-Lautrec Painter of Paris

I get what Mondrian was about some of the time but i still dont like it, i cant see the art, just the form, which i know is probably part of the point he was tryin gto make, but it does not instill an emotion for me other than possible apathy.
I would love to do some Batik that would be cool.

I'm pretty sure Mondrian was the inspiration for Ikea. Stark geometrics just appeal to some people. I would like to study art criticism and theory, but I'm really not sure I could get it from a book. Liking Mondrian is most likely like that personality test that is done by picking the little glyph that most appeals to you. I also find typefonts to be very aesthetically pleasing.

@3k1yp2,
I think a more interesting question than "do you paint?" is "why do you paint (or create any sort of art)?"

@TickTockMan,
I first started to cultivate a communal hobby with my wife, as it is more likely that I learn art than she learn linguisitcs and social theory. But now I do it because I seem to be attempting to express the 'me' in abstract form. I don't consider myself mentally or emotionally disturbed but it sure is therapeutic, and with the stuff I produce, I may be more disturbed than I thought. LOL

Why is it that the really poisonous pigments always look the tastiest?
Cadmium red deep just looks like it would be delicious spread on a bagel.

Van Gogh probably spread his on a baguette, yellow is the spray cheese, cheese gives you nightmares and the yellow sends you insane.
Do anything for convenience foods, even then:)

@sometime sun,
I wish I could paint. Lack of supplies prevents me from doing so. Ohhh I could create a forest! If I ever have the chance that will be my first painting. My favourite graffiti artist is Banksy.

I licked my pastels and chalk. Chalk tastes nice, but it is just way too dry.

You dont need paint, some people use their poo, George and Gilbert who i cant stand, but it does mean you have no excuse when saying you have no supplies, you wouldn't want to lick that would you?Very Happy
Banksy is very good and pretty much the forerunner the only one with their name out there, there is a woman i like, with a name similar to yours i think but i cant quite remember off the top of my head.

@3k1yp2,
I particularly like Dali as well. And sometime sun, I put art as a general topic because I was painting and in an artistic mood, but i didn't have anything in particular i wanted to discuss. But now there is something i have been thinking about: why are some people more qualified to "judge" art than others. Of course there is some degree of technical skill like composition and unity (or lack thereof) to consider, but can someone really just say that your art is mediocre or unimpressive? I went to an art competition a few months ago, and the people there serving as the judges seemed to all have their own interpretation of good art. Did i not win a place because of my luck that i drew the wrong judge? I have opted not to go this year, since i really see no point in submiting myself to hours of waiting just to prgress or lose based on someone elses whim. is there something im missing?
