@catfood phil,
As a general introduction to philosophy and its many branches, reading Bertrand Russell's
History of Philosophy is a good place to start. Many of the great philosophers, from Plato to Mill can be read on-line, and as you begin to find your way through philosophy, reading those who seem to interest you will open up different ideas, positions, and ways of looking at the world.
But this does not mean that you cannot contribute to the dialogues currently underway here in the forum or to refrain from asking questions, even if they might seem elementary to you. We are all together here on a quest for greater understanding, and help one another through philosophic difficulties.
Regards,
John
