Just a quick introduction, I am totally new to philosophy but I am fascinated and wish I had branched into it before now.
As a noob I will have more questions then answers, her is my first.
What books would you recommended for someone just starting their journey into the the intellectual high ground that is Philosophy? Bering in mind that mine is self reliant study and I am not at university or the like.:bigsmile:

Welcome to the forums! This is a place for everyone who enjoys philosophy from the armchair or the writer.

As far as books, it would be much easier to recommend books depending on what sort of philosophy you enjoy most. If I knew a bit more about you, I'm sure I could recommend something you would enjoy.

@catfood phil,
As a general introduction to philosophy and its many branches, reading Bertrand Russell's History of Philosophy is a good place to start. Many of the great philosophers, from Plato to Mill can be read on-line, and as you begin to find your way through philosophy, reading those who seem to interest you will open up different ideas, positions, and ways of looking at the world.

But this does not mean that you cannot contribute to the dialogues currently underway here in the forum or to refrain from asking questions, even if they might seem elementary to you. We are all together here on a quest for greater understanding, and help one another through philosophic difficulties.
Regards,
John

@Icon,
Well literally just starting out so haven't really been subjected to enough to form an affiliation with any particular variety, so I suppose I am looking for books to get me started. Have Immanuel Kant's Critique of pure reason, but i am looking for books that can help develop my knowledge of philosophy as a broader subject, or books people have found particularly interesting.
A good starting point if you like.Very Happy

@catfood phil,
Firstly, welcome to the forums!
Secondly, though I admit I am no philosophy reader, remember that it is not just old and sometimes purely droll writing by esteemed philosophers that you are looking for. Many philosophers clothe thier theories with the rhetorical goodness of fiction. Gulliver's Travels and Animal Farm are prime examples. But before you go on a library spree, look through the forum and take note of what peaks your intrest.
Hoping to face you in many future debates,

@catfood phil,
Kant's Critique of Pure Reason might not be the best place to begin; he is neither droll nor always the model of immediate clarity. Averroes makes an interesting suggestion, and I would perhaps suggest either some of the shorter works of Voltaire as a beginning or John Stuart Mill's two essays, On Liberty and Utilitarianism. All of these were written to present certain philosophical positions to a more general audience and they avoid the excesses of philosophical jargon.

Philosophy A Beginner's Guide by Jenny Teichman & Katherine C.Evans ISBN 0-631-19617-X and Thinking from A to Z by Nigel Warburton ISBN 0-415-09686-3 or similar books may help.

@democritus,
Reading those JS Mill essays was my beginning in philosophy. I also recommend his Theism.
