Hey there, you there, me here. No opening thought or question, just a thirst that needs quenching. Hope I can drink here.

I'm a construction worker who for years has felt like I've been :brickwall:, racists to the left of me, sexists to the right of me, homophobes all around me, just looking for a little intelligent conversation.

Bill Hicks is my philosophical rock, LSD my inspiration. I've squeegeed my 3rd eye and am ready to partake of the tree of knowledge, even if it leads to hell.

According to Blake "the road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom" if so I am ubber wise, time will tell.

Nice to meet you all.
Cheers,
Padawan

@Padawan phil,
Well, hopefully knowledge leads not to hell but to its opposite, sweetness and light. And increasing knowledge helps one to avoid stumbling on things strewn along the path: intolerance, bigotry, and outright stupidity that refuses to ask questions and fears freedom.

We may amend Blake to read, "the road to access (internet) leads to the palace of wisdom" or at least to the palace where wisdom is eagerly sought.
Welcome to Philforum!
Regards,
John

@jgweed,
Hey Padawan, welcome!

Just wanted to ask... how the hell did you get into construction? Razz
Its amazing how society can let so many intelligent people be given dull jobs. No offense meant, im sure there are construction jobs which are interesting and you may enjoy your work, but ive seen and worked in the construction industry a bit myself and it doesnt really excite your mind a lot Razz

@Padawan phil,
Cheers All,

Love the reworking of Blake jgweed.

It was more by accident than design g3org3m. I gave up on Uni after getting into debt during first year. Worked in shearing sheds for a few years, then did some travelling. When I got home a mate said they were looking for blokes, been doing it ever since. Originally I was only planning to do a couple of years and head off travelling again, but when I had the coin saved up to go I decided to think about the future for the first time in my life and built a house instead.

So here I am, mortgage slave, stuck and a little stressed about the downturn that's coming. If I can hold on to my job I should have the place paid off in a few years and will be keen to start my delayed world tour.

As for the work, I've been on some really interesting projects and some incredibly dull ones, but there's always some satisfaction to be gained when you see the final product. Plus the money is always good, sometimes ridiculous. Long hours and hard work have never really bothered me, it can be almost therapeutic at times.

I also think it's help make me a more rounded person. Before I started this work I wasn't very good with my hands. Now I'm confident using tools, except with cars which are still a mystery to me. Working with my weaknesses rather than my strengths has definately been beneficial.
