@boagie,
Welcome rose!

You wandered in and yet you didn't shut the door behind you? What's the deal with that! Air conditioning for the philosophy forum is rather expensive. LOL! Just kidding! Welcome to this crazy rollercoaster known as philosophy forum.

Are you interested in a any particular areas of philosophy?

@Rose phil,
Nothing formal. My interests lie in Zen, Metaphysics, and the Philosophy of Mind and Consciousness. I have many, probably, silly questions.

@Rose phil,
One area of philosophy I was particularly drawn to was Aristotelian metaphysics and ontology. Fun stuff and very interesting to read. In particular, Aristotle's Metaphysicssubstance, but he goes into things like definition (Socrates' snub nose nose) and generation (books 7-8) which bear a striking resemblance to genesis in the Bible.

As for Philosophy of the mind and consciousness (and a splash of metaphysics), you would definitely be a fan of the modern philosophers, like Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, etc. Descartes Cogito argument, part of his Meditations of First Philosophy is always a good read with his dualistic account of the mind/body problem. Funny thing, I hated modern philosophy, but I seem to be drawing on that pool of philosophers almost every time I'm on the forum.

But don't think you have many silly questions. Far from it. A silly question is far from silly because it is essentially a question

@VideCorSpoon,
Yes, Einstein said that if the idea isn't at first absurd, there is no hope for it. Or something like that, I dunno. Welcome to the forum Rose!

Thank you for that lovely warm welcome.

I would like to share this with you.

"Most people, including ourselves, live in a world of relative ignorance. We are even comfortable with that ignorance, because it is all we know. When we first start facing truth, the process may be frightening, and many people run back to their old lives. But if you continue to seek truth, you will eventually be able to handle it better. In fact, you want more! It's true that many people around you now may think you are weird or even a danger to society, but you don't care. Once you've tasted the truth, you won't ever want to go back to being ignorant" ~ Socrates (469 - 399 BC)

@Rose phil,
Good quote! That Plato and his crazy little cave.

There is an old metaphysical Vedanta Indian saying which basically says, "one who thinks they know everything is truly ignorant. But one who thinks themselves ignorant is in fact wise because ignorance implies that they understand the fact they cannot know everything."

Again, Welcome to the forum! Enjoy!
