@Pythagorean,
I think, regarding philosophers, Nietzsche and maybe even Kierkegaard should be added. Both are foundational figures to the existential movement that developed later.
Also, I would recommend to anyone interested in existentialism Camus, Dostoevsky, and Kafka. Though none were philosophers in the strict sense, their work oozes philosophical brilliance, and they certainly flow along existential lines. Kerouac went so far as to say of Nietzsche that he was Dostoevsky fifty years too late.
Otherwise, wow! what a list. I certainly have a much longer list of 'must reads' now. Thanks.
@Didymos Thomas,
Thanks for the feedback DT. I will get bibliographies for Nietzsche and Kierkegaard and see if I can't stick them somewhere convenient that's not too incongruous.
And I agree with your sentiment. Good bibliographies are underrated.
@Pythagorean,
I think that bibliographies for individual thinkers would best be located in their respective forums, and this bibliography limited to general surveys, else it will turn into an unwieldy and large endeavor.
I would add:
Hazel E. Barnes
An Existentialist Ethics
NY: Knopf, 1967
@jgweed,
I think there is a confusion between the "works" of each philosopher on the one hand, and the general secondary literature surrounding each philosopher on the other hand.
It is overly easy to produce a list of works by an individual philosopher or thinker whereas it is more useful to produce a bibliography of the secondary literature.
I would place a chronological list of works by Nietzsche in the Nietzsche forum and underneath that I could produce a bibliography of the secondary literature. How does that sound?
That would be nice I think.
@Pythagorean,
I have already done Nietzsche, although it needs some additions, in roughly a similar fashion, with original and selected secondary sources separated and briefly annotated. A bibliography of general or introductory works on the "existentialist movement" will be a great addition to Philforum, as would be bibliographies for the individual philosophers. (And much easier to update all around).
