G'day,
Is there room for an uneducated old bloke?. Or do the academics that contribute to these forums have little or no regard for the thoughts of lesser beings.

Having read some of the posts it would seem that some believe that in order to have a reasoned discussion one must be a graduate of Plato's Academy, a member of the Lyceum or similar schools of philosophy.

What I have difficulty understanding is why is "philosophy" so complex, or perhaps why do people make "philosophy" so complex.

I have an imaginary place I like to go to in order to get an overview of a problem, situation, belief system etc.

I sit on a park bench under a tree on the top of a hill where I can see everything that is happening below me. From this vantage point I can see all the people below chipping away at small bits of a problem or trying to understand a belief system from their narrow field of vision and getting nowhere, a few have stepped back a bit further but very few seem to be able to obtain an overview of what is happing in all areas.

Take this philosophy caper, from where I sit I see people trying to resolve any number of complex thoughts without consideration as to why they need to do this or how the resolution of these thoughts fit in the overall picture.

Why spend a life time trying to understand the nuances of a particular belief? As those who are involved in various religions do. A life time is wasted trying to understand "why we are here", "does God exist", "how should I live my life" etc, rather than just getting on with it. Doing ones best, not harming others, and enjoying life. Just accept that God doesn't exist, there no eternal life.

Just do your best

Sorry if this is to simplistic.

Actually, we just prefer to eat the souls of those lesser beings. :p

Alright, seriously though - man, you, and everyone else alive, is welcome on the forums - and your views are welcome, too. Most of us are best described as philosophy hobbyists. Anyone interested in discussing philosophy, religion, science, and a host of other topics is more than welcome.

If some do hold such a belief, prove them wrong. Wink

To impress the girls with giant words they don't understand.

I don't always get the complexity either.

compo - make yourself at home, look around and get involved in some of the discussion. We've got a pretty good group here, and always like to see new faces joining the conversations. If you have any questions, you can ask any of our moderators and staff.

Good to have you around Smile

@Didymos Thomas,
Yeah, common pick-up lines have nothing on discussing modern philosophy when you`re trying to pick up the hotties. Wink

Welcome to the site, compo.

@Aristoddler,
Hey Compo, you can't be too old if you make it to the top of a hill every now and again and G'day to you.

@Aristoddler,
G'day bloke.Smile

:)We are more than happy to have you with us. As to teminology, after you have been engaged in enough dialogues you might be surprized at yourself. My own understanding of philosphical terminolgoy leaves me wanting. Not to worry, you have lots of company here!Wink

@boagie,
Welcome compo!!!

I too have an imaginary place. I own a cottage cheese cottage time share next to your hill where I try to extract sunlight from cucumbers. Oh, and by the way, those "bits of problems" people are chipping away at is in fact my brand new shrubbery and stone wall. Seriously, it's starting to piss me off. I just put those in a few weeks ago. Do you know how hard it is to get imaginary contractors to build an imaginary wall and shrubbery out in the middle of no place? The chances are virtually non-existent.

Enjoy the view...

@compo,
G'day ya old bloke! Smile

As we all know, picking up hotties with philosophical pickup lines rarely works. LOL, that's why we're all here.

Welcome anyway Compo and good to see you online. I agree with many of your statements.. keep it simple and just be the best you can be. I have a dear friend, who is another bloody bloke in Australia named Richard Grant. Just click on his name to be taken to his profile.

Well hope to see you around and we have some new features being added to the forum soon.
