On Philosophy
Philosophy developed since the 16th century, has achieved impressive fruits which means that philosophy seems to have peaked, in fact, it does not. Philosophy is like a book from top to bottom, it is only the upper part of the work completed, and the lower part of the work has only just begun. You can keep saying this suspect, but I will prove this view is correct later. How can we let philosophy further? Perhaps just like build a new house. I don't think the great wall of text is too much an issue, but the text is rather small. I have a hard time reading long posts in smallish font sizes.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Western philosophy begin its development in ancient Greece around the 5th Century BC rather than the 16th Century?

Lix, Thaeatetus, my take on it is that almost all ancient philosophy was the extension of the work of Plato and Aristotle known as Scholasticism. Now by the time Descartes came around, Scholasticism had built a big vast facade in which they claimed to describe how the world works, but what Descartes did was say "Most of the components of your big vast facade are useless!" (effectively) which (of course) completely undermined and destabilized Scholasticism--and very quickly too. Descartes certainly didn't invent philosophy, but he did reinvent it.

As far as our normal philosophical education goes, don't we go Plato, Aristotle, and then jump 2k years to Descartes?

I will agree with you this far: Plato and Aristotle did work in ethics, and while Decartes may have finally broken physical philosophy from moral philosophy, I trust that when most people today think philosophy they are considering the moral/ethical end of it... Hard science is physics, and everything else is ethics, and while philosophy as we know it should be aware of physics so that it thinks not to contradict science; still, the scientific approach does not work ethically... The uncertainty principal reigns in ethics... We can never weigh anything exactly in ethics... Our fingers are always on the scale, and the rest of us too, because it is humanity we weigh...
I would say the medieval philsophers broke physics from metaphysics, considering metaphysics as theology... Kant made that break complete, trashed metaphysics and tried to make a science of morals/ethics... The way I understand it; Descartes first brought true scientific method to physical inquiry, and yet much of his physics rested on observation so that it is common to say that since Huygenes six of Descartes seven rules of impact are wrong... In a sense, because Descartes was thinking differently, in the light of "Divine" God given reason, and Huygens was drawing conclusion from experimental evidence...I do not know that descartes was not the better philosopher, and Huygens the better physicist...I am kind of treading water here, out of the shallow end... I am reading a good book called Critique of scientific reason by Kurt Hubner, translated Dixon and Dixon, University of Chicago Press... It seems like it may be the best philosophy I have read in a long time... But what I say is just for thought..Don't trust me on it. Anyone familiar with the book???
