I'm curious about the origin of the phrase "man of substance".
It must have some relation to philosophical conceptions of "substance" but there are many different philosophical conceptions of substance. Can anyone tell me what philosophical tradition this conception of substance best fits with this phrase? Can it be tied back to Aristotle's Metaphysics for example? Or maybe it's not so philosophical after all? I googled around a little but didn't find much.
