People don` t form families because there is something call "love". In ancient times, people get marry because they want to merge their economic resources together. Since there is no welfare in pre-industrial times, it is beneficial for onces own interest to be taken care of by onces own offspring. Lineage is also used to transfer economic resources to onces own descendant to ensure the survival of onces own genes.

@platorepublic,
Both love and economy are most likely just surface forms for the underlying biological tendency to form them.

@TuringEquivalent,
You won't marry anybody just for economic reasons.

@TuringEquivalent,
Only humans continue to relate to the family when they are grown up and mature. In the animal kingdom that never happens. On the contrary, the parents will force the offspring to leave the family even when the cub wants to stay.

The family is an UNNATURAL institution.

But I talk to deaf ears (and children).

Not true in the case of Bonobos and Chimpanzees, our closest anscestors as well as many higher primate species. Also in primate species that disband the family in adulthood, if an individual is ejected from a family troop it is normally an adolescent male who is expected to go out and "make his way" or come back and "overthrow the father figure", both of which are very human family traits.
