What makes a popular thread?

Somehow (consciously or unconsciously) the thread title draws your attention. And then you decide whether it's worth while spending any more time on it.

@platorepublic,
The title is the first bit we see. But the title isn't everything. Content of the thread makes it popular.

@platorepublic,
A title that makes clear what the thread is about draws attention to interested Members, and then the content of the initial post, if it is written in such a way as to invite discussion about a defined subject matter will start the thread participation. If the replies are interesting and contribute to the discussion in a meaningful way, even if there be a difference of opinions (and HERE, that is often the case), then the discussion will continue and most likely draw in other Members just by the number of replies.

Yes. But the issue or topic has to interest enough members to begin with. That is clearly necessary. And there is something else, too: an issue when first raised may interest a good many members because they all think about it in different ways, but when, as should happen in the course of the thread, the issue is more clearly defined, many initially interested drop away. Maybe the vaguer and more general the question, the more popular the thread will be, initially.

Something that appeals to your inner selfish desire(s), something that has public appeal or disgust. Something that pose a great value.

..etc.
