@xris,
Honestly I have never played anything from the call of duty franchise. I bought a 360 for the sole purpose of playing Halo. But speaking from the perspective of somebody that consecutively played Halo 1,2,3, and ODST, I can say these things. The first game in any franchise is great. The second game comes around, and it does somewhat better on graphics and so on. The context of the game suffers a little bit because they have to literally do flippys in the air while doing the same thing they did in the last game in order to keep it new and fresh. When the third game comes around, its either a game changer or a deal breaker. It has to be drastically different or suffer the fate of all life-supported franchises? the bargain bin. The third game then resets the standards and becomes the benchmark for the subsequent games that follow (in the case of Halo 3, ODST). I have to say I have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of the Halo franchise with my friends (of which, sadly, a few of them were banned in the great LIVE purge a month back). The first game I thought could never be topped. That was proven wrong with Halo 2. When Halo 3 came along, that just resets everything and I never touched 1 or 2 ever again.
So the lesson is, if you can determine whether or not COD: Modern Warfare 2 is a game changer or a worthy successor, then by all means get Modern Warfare 2. However, if it I not as much a game changer as a continuation of the same game with the same graphics engine and everything else like that, then I would say get the first one first and the second one second. You would definitely enjoy the franchise better that way.
Also, it might be useful for others to view the trailers for each COD game in order to judge for themselves.
