Is the term merely to remedy feelings or is there any truth behind it?
Things happen for a cause. But that need not mean that they happen for a reason. If I slip on the ice and break my leg, that happens for a cause. The ice was slippery. But I had (and there was no) reason to slip on the ice. In fact, the opposite. But if I went to the store to buy milk, then, of course, that was my reason for going to the store, and is was also the cause of my going to the store. So, some things happen for a reason. And some do not.
It is important to distinguish between cause and reason.
