Hello All,

I found this site with eager intent on being able to learn about ideas from others as well learn about great thinkers... I'm by no means an expert in this subject, but I've a healthy dose of suspicion when considering subjects of morals and absolutes... I'm currently reading Ayn Rand's work of Selfishness and have been thinking about the philosophical (good vs. bad, altruism, etc.) aspects of organized religion and how they can be removed for further analysis of religion.

This seems like a good place to start turing rocks!

@Faithfulskeptic,
Thank you, and yes I've unearthed quite a bit in the first pages with Miss Rand, she's managed to en-capture so much thought into succinct sentences that I've been careful not to be neglectful.

The site seems to be encouraging thus far, thanks for managing/maintaining a place on the internet that isn't trying to sell something amongst other things.

@Faithfulskeptic,
Hello, welcome to the forum. Ayn Rand, whether one agrees or disagrees with her, is always a thought-provoking author.

@Faithfulskeptic,
The famous 50-page speech by John Galt in Atlas Shrugged, which Rand's publishers thought much too long for a novel, presents her unique and thought-provoking view, whatever one thinks of her other philosophical positions.

Everyone today has moral positions about everything under the sun, but few take the time to think them through, or to seriously engage in entertaining different perspectives.

Welcome to Philforum!
Regards,
John

@Faithfulskeptic,
I read Atlas Shrugged a year and a half ago for the first time. Presidential election was close at hand, so the book fit in.

Ayn Rand had some good ideas, and we need to pay attention to what she said - not to turn into "selfish" or "greedy" people, but to make sure we don't tilt the playing field in trying to make it "fair" with any kind of wealth redistribution and/or taxes.

I apply Ayn Rand to government, and Libertarianism, more so than philosophy - but that's my take from it.
