This seems like a good format for discussing philosophy.

In daily life, or "cocktail party" venues, you can't get into anything very far, and professional philosophy is, well, I tried philosophy graduate school years ago and it wasn't for me.

Here are 2 quotes I like:

"The study of philosophy is not that we may know what people have thought, but what the truth of things is." - Aquinas

"You will not learn philosophy from me, but philosophizing." - Kant

@Journeyman,
Welcome to Philforum!
What one learns from studying the tradition includes not just other perspectives, but as Kant wrote, the many ways to philosophize. In a way, these forums reflect the same kind of learning.
Cheers,
John
