Hello,

I'm writing a largely aphoristic book on mind, using a broad, cybernetic sense of the word. It's called Mind Making: The Shared Laws of Natural and Artificial Intelligence.

One of my reasons for joining this forum is to get some feedback on the book before I finish it.

The whole book's available for free as a PDF. I also offer a print-on-demand hardcover through lulu. Obviously the hardcover is not free.

How should I offer my free book on this forum without the hardcover causing my post to be marked as spam? I can think of 3 major options:

1. Link to my website, which is guaranteed to have the latest version but links directly to lulu where the book is sold.
2. Link to the book on scribd.com. Nothing there asks you for money, though that page and a couple pages of the PDF, do link back to #1 above.
3. Attach the PDF to my post.

Which method fits within this forum's anti-spam policies? Or is this forum not for critiquing and improving books by members?

@Patrick Roberts phil,
I appreciate your concern about following forum policy about "spam." Please PM me with the various links for review and refer to this post in the body, as well as the size of the .pdf file you wish to attach.
Thanks,
John

First of all, I just want to say that I have respect for you, as you are one of few that would take the time to inquire concerning the regulations of this site, before making a post that could be suspect.

We just recently had another member post a very long argument here, which he or she wanted critiqued. We didn't have any problem with this for a few reasons. For one, it was presented in an easily-accessible fashion - the member outlined the argument into sections, making it easy for someone to view the constituents, and pick them apart, or reference them, if need be. Secondly, the argument was philosophically-relevant. Thirdly, the member stuck around to philosophize, responding to critiques and advocating good discussion.

I think if you can achieve these three things, we would have no problem having you post your material. My only concern is how you would achieve number one, since you're asking for your entire book to be critiqued. Perhaps you could post particular themes or arguments within your book which could probe philosophical discussion? This would help the forum narrow down the central take home points of your work, and promote organization (of text and mind).

Thanks once again for letting us know and I hope we'll be able to accomodate your work,

Zeth

@Zetherin,
Thanks for your thoughts Zeth.

The book's presently 23k words. Not immense, but now I'm thinking I'll get a better response if I instead post summaries of the key ideas. I'd still like to include a link to the book so that anyone who is interested can understand the ideas in full.

The book is largely organized as half-page numbered aphorisms in ten page chapters. Is that convenient enough to refer to?

I'm certainly interested in sticking around to discuss my ideas, and not merely market my book. Most of the thoughts come out my AI work. This ensures that the ideas are at least useful, and not complete theoretical nonsense, but there could be issues with my interpretations of them.

Despite the AI source, all the ideas are abstracted to the philosophical plane, ignoring some small examples, so the book easily qualifies as relevant to this board.
