Is There a COG/Jesus People Connection
Back in the day, I remember folks in The Family bragging about our The Jesus People were a spin-off or knock-off of The COG. Is this based on any truth does anyone know?
There's this cat here in Portland who always seemed a little odd in much the same way I feel I come off to other kids my age. Everyone in my circle of friends knows him as a train-hopping, professional hobo (think a modern day variation of Jack Black's "You Can't Win"). In recent conversations with him I discovered that his parents were part of Jesus People USA. He once hooked up with a very good friend of mine and she told me that he was one of the most socially awkward people she'd ever met. My desire to further understand myself, I had to pry. Late one night, skating and bullsh!ting over a couple brass monkeys I told him of my past and he told me a little of his and it got me remembering tales.
They are not related.
I know someone in JPUSA and all I really know is that he is upset that he is felt by the elders to not be "mature" enough or "ready" to casually date a girl he likes. He is in his mid-20's. and has been there a while. If you are a member and live with them, they assign you a job on site or you work for one of their companies, but are not alot to save money..they just feed u and give you shelter.... not money that you can put away for your future. You become dependant on the group, and are encouraged to do so...
In my opinion, it is best to just find a nice Christian church in your area to be a part of...
Giving your whole life to Jesus does not have to mean that you cannot have your own savings account or make smart choices for yourself without being told what to do by your "leaders"..Guidance and support is good...total control is not.
Take care out there and God Bless,
Tamara

No, we (JPUSA) are not related to the COG, though as I explained on another thread here, the COG took over Jesus People Army, which before that point had spun off JP Milwaukee. JP Milwaukee lasted a little over a year before splintering into a few groups, one of which was the early JPUSA (then called "Jesus People USA Traveling Team"). JPUSA settled in Chicago by 1973, removed from leadership its head (JP Herrin), and reorganized around a plural leadership. Ultimately we joined a well-known evangelical denomination, the Evangelical Covenant Church (sister to the Ev. Free Church), and remain there today.

Please see my August 8, 3:45 p.m. post on "JPusa". It applies to this thread as well.
