SEX ABUSE AND MIND CONTROL: RAISED IN A CULT

Today we'll meet 2 survivors of a controversial religious cult who risked their lives to tell their story publicly for the first time. Caryn was born into the cult and raised under their doctrines for seventeen years. She claims that this organization formerly known as "The Children of God," now identified as "The Family," has doctrines that allow their adult members to literally "beat the devil" out of misbehaving children. She was raised to believe children need nothing more than a seventh grade education to worship God and was beaten for any attempts to educate herself further. At one point, she says she was locked in a closet for nearly two months, deprived of food, and then later made to perform tasks that were impossible to complete. She says the cult uses methods like these to prevent strong-willed members from leaving. Don a former member, also shares in Caryn’s recollections. While he was not treated as badly as Caryn, he admits that his sister was captured by the cult’s leaders several years ago who viewed her as a pure and saintly figure. He says they beat and molested her and then published her battered image in the cult’s magazine to display an example of what acceptable punishment is.
