Please, help..advice is needed.
Hello everyone & thanks for reading this...I have a question. I'd very much appreciate an expert's help. Here is the situation...I have a friend who is an LPN (in VA) and has an old relative. This relative is sick and requires medical care at home. My LPN friend offered to take care of this relative without charging fees. My question is..Can my LPN friend take doctor orders? If yes, how? Does she have to go through an RN? Please, explain. Thanks so much for your help! Rolling Eyes

LPN abilities
Hi.
LPNs can only take doctors orders that are written, not verbal. It's purely a licensure thing, but if she is doing it as a job (whether paid or not), the doctor can't give her verbals - it's illegal, and she could lose her licence if the state board found out. She's better off allowing the family to get hospice/home care in to put an RN on the case and then working under that RN. The RN can take the orders, and she can do pretty much everything else.
