Good luck with whatever decision you decide. Are you interested in working in the actual surgery or on a medical surgical floor? I have been a nurse in surgery/operating room for 6 years. When I graduated from nursing school, I did a year in a perioperative program that trained me in on how to be a surgical nurse. The good thing about nursing is if you are interested in a certain area you can go immediatley into that area of interest and get trained in that specialty like surgery. Most hospitals these days usually have a intern program for different specialties. I don't know about job shadowing being available but I do know that some nursing schools give their students some time in different specialties to see what they like and dislike.
