Nursing possibilities
Well their is the possiblity of being a dialysis nurse, surgical nurse, ER nurse, ICU nurse, and you can always specialize in areas. You could be a nurse that takes care of and teaches patients about diabetes, colostomies, etc. Their are tons of possibilities. Decide what you are most interested in and pursue it.

life after med/surg
Med/Surg is very difficult, especially if your floor is chronically understaffed. My floor hired 5 new grads (myself included) last July and we are all leaving. Sad 2 of us have taken jobs in the OR and one is going to pediatrics at another hosp. The others are undecided, but are leaving in June.
I originally wanted to go into Maternity nursing, but I let another nurse talk me out of going directly into a specialty area. I should have listened to my heart. Crying or Very sad
If you have a clinical educator at your hospital, tell them you're not happy where you are and maybe they can let you shadow in other dept's. They would probably rather see you transfer than quit.
Hang in there, you're not alone

What to do about being a new grad on M/S
I graduated two years ago from an ADN program, and I know exactly how you are feeling. The adage of "Nurses eat their young" certainly applies to the med/surg floor. Twisted Evil I have stuck it out. Shocked I live in an area without a lot of other opportunities, so I have had to learn as I went along. You will feel totally overwhelmed, but it will be worth it in the long run. I am now going to become a traveling nurse. I have the basic knowledge learned on med/surg and feel I can just about go into any department with confidence. I still do not feel totally prepared, but I have gained more knowledge than I could have had I gone into just one area. Now I am ready to explore and expand. It all boils down to what it is you ultimately want to do. Best of luck!

med surg blues
There are many other possibilities out there for you! Just keep looking and trying until you find your "neche". I can fully understand you frustration. The hospital corporations and most others of those who employ us as nursing continue with the perception that we as nurses go along with "room and board". This has led alot of nurses to leave the field (ie: to many patients assigned to one nurse, as well as the patients that we are caring for are more acutely ill than ever!)
My mother was an LPN for close to 20 years before she went back to school to get her RN. She graduated (going part time) at the age of 50.
Myself, I went on to obtain my Master's in Public Health Administration and am currently working on obtaining a pharmacy degree Smile
Just remember, you are never to old to learn and if you are not compfortable working in the area to which you are assigned, speak to your supervisor. Otherwise, keep looking until you find the field that you are happy working in. There is nothing worse than staying were you are unhappy
