When will I feel comfortable with new job?
I will be graduating nursing school in May and have been hired on to a Medical floor. I am already thinking of how scared I'm going to be out on my own. How long did it take anyone else to feel confident when they started out? Any advice on things that will prepare me for the real world?
For our new graduate nurse
You will have a preceptor for about 6 weeks-that's the right way to do
things for new nurses starting orientation-Don't be afraid to ask questions
noone in nursing is born knowing everything-Learn the right way to do
things and make sure you review your progress with your preceptor
who should help you set appropriate goals-For me it took about 6 months
to get used to the routine-Wish you the best!
Please remember that it is good to be a little nervous. Your job will get easier. I have been a nurse for 13 years with 6 years being in transport. What I have learned is that you always should be a little nervous with every patient because it keeps you on your toes. When you sit back and think you know it all and have it all together you WILL BE HUMBLED. Have fun this is a great job.
I believe you will take time, at lease several month. May take first 6 month, then see how you feel. I believe it really depends. I met the student take years practice and she still unable to handle certain situation. She still need help start new IV. Also I met another student, after she takes six month practice on the floor, she looks like experiences nurse and has very good confindence. I mean, as RN, learned nursing theory in the classroom just first step in this carrer. A huge part knowledge and experience will learning from clinic practice. Do not be scared, everyone learning from beginning. Be confindent, you will be good.
Always remember you are never on your own! It doesn't matter if you have been an RN for 20 minutes or 20 years. I've been a nurse for a little over a year and I'm still not 100% confident but I think that's good because sometimes confidence can lead to carelessness. We and our patients can't afford for us to be careless. My advice is to always ask questions and if you feel like you can't ask the people you work with for help then you need to find another floor to work on! Good luck!!
