Health Care Course
I'm 18, female, and in September I'm starting a Health Care Course. I have to work in a nursing home then after the 2 years I can do nursing. Can someone please tell me what working in a nursing home is like? Is it a lot different from a hospital? I'll be there as a Care Assistant.
Hi Martina,
I have only worked in a nursing home as part of the nursing course for around 6 weeks. I dont want to put u off, because there are some lovely nursing homes out there who really care for their residents, but the one i went to, i wouldnt put my family in there for sure! I suppose you are doing your NVQ 2 or/and 3 in the nursing home and this is why u have to wait 2 years. I didnt have the grades to start nursing without having to do an apprenticeship first. I am so lucky in the sense that I did the NVQ's whilst working in a hospital. A nursing home is very very different to hospital based nursing, for one your hospital patients are usually acutely ill. The care in the home will be providing basic personal hygiene, feeding, toileting and keeping the residents "happy", and there will be alot of moving and handling involved. I'd say keep your head up, and enjoy it, dont lose your focus on why u want to be a nurse. Good luck and hope it goes well. X
