floating to other floors...
Shocked I am a pediatric/nursery nurse, that is what I do. I have been a nurse for 15 years and have only had the experience of NICU, peds, ob and nursery. I am now working at a smaller hospital and "they" are trying to pull me to all areas ie: telemetry, surgical, med/surg... you get the idea. I have not worked with adults since nursing school and I do not feel very comfortable. When I protest, the answer I get is "you are a RN you should be able to work anywhere" I disagree. I feel like you know what you work with. They only pull nurses with pediatric experience to work with me, but I am expected to go any where. I guess what I want to know is any other nurses experiencing this too. How do others handle this?

Floating to other Floors
I know exactly what you mean. I have been in that situation many, many times. More than I'd like to remember. I have even had my job threatened if I didn't float! Who's telling you that you have to float? If it's your Nurse Manager/Unit Manager then request that "refresher classes" be set up for you and other nurses that feel that they need to "brush up" on some things. If it's a shift supervisor, tell the supervisor you will take it up with your Nurse Manager. Are you the only one from your unit being told to float? If so, obviously, it's not fair and you need to take it up with Employee Relations. Then lastly, you can do what I did for a while and go to the unit, get your assignment and when you come to something you don't feel comfortable with, get someone else (co-worker or the Supervisor) and tell them that you are not comfortable with doing the procedure and would they help "walk you through it". They'll get the hint and the floating will either slow down or you'll get the "refresher classes" you need.
