Is Northampton Uni any good? (UK)
Im wanting to start a nursing degree this year, ive got an interview at Queens in Belfast but my partner cant find a good job in northern ireland. So im having to rethink and apply late via UCAS, hes got a possible job in Northampton, so is it any good? Would I be better going to Birmingham? Is there any chance I would get in to Birmingham at this late stage?

I really want to get on a respected course, but my partner (who is an SHO, and therefore thinks he knows everything!) thinks it doesnt matter where i study as the courses are all the same and it wont matter for my CV where I studyed. Is this true?

I know thats a lot of questions but any help would be greatly appreciated.x

Check out the link below for relative rankings 2005.

http://education.guardian.co.uk/universityguide2005/table/0,15905,-5163916,00.html

What those rankings mean you'll have to read for yourself. You definitely want a high spend per student and the higher the student/teacher ratio the more teaching you get.

I'm just coming to the end of a nursing course at LJMU (unfortunately ranked at 73). I am a mature student and with family responsibilities had little choice in where to do my training as I needed proximity and finance (NHS bursary).

I already have a degree gained some years ago and a previous career and been in the position of interviewing and employing people. My personal opinion, for what it is worth, is that while a good university will not hinder you it has never been on my list of criteria for prospective employees. Far more important would be personality, extra curricular activity, interest and enthusiasm.

One further thought - have a look at the trusts that the uni uses for practice placement, arguably these will have more of an effect on the quality of the qualification. The unknown factor in all of this is the calibre of your mentors, over which you have no control whatsoever. This just depends on the individual, I've had some excellent practical tuition and guidance on some placements, on others not so good.
