I am a nurse manager at a small rural hospital. Several months ago we moved all of nursing to 12 hour shifts. Staff seems to like the 12 hour shifts, but there is confusion on how to handle on-call and cancelling a shift. For instance, if someone is working 12 hours, do they get placed on call for the entire shift or part of the shift and how does staff perceive this? Could others please tell me how this works in their facilities?
