change in title/position
I currently work for a local connunity hospital as an LPN with over 7 yrs
experince and will be graduating in may with my ADN, I work 12hr days every weekpend, my issue is this: I was "temperorialy" offered a 12 hr noc shift, I have asked my department manager if I could "keep" my position even though I'm changing title, this same employer is "phasing out LPN's(as the LPN's leave they are going to replace them with RN's)I have worked for this employer for almost ten years. I feel I should be able to retain my position even though I'm changing title. Any suggesions??
The first thing you need to do is try to figure out why your hospital is making the change. Is it because of a regulatory requirement, or is it because they want to be more attractive to physicians? (Physicians like to know that a hospital's support staff is top notch.)
The point is that the move to change from LVNs to RNs is probably a decision that wasn't made lightly by hospital administration. It probably involved a lot of deliberations prior to the decision. Administrators always know that change brings some friction within an organization. This makes these choices very tough.
I don't think that making your voice heard will change your administration's mind. If you really want to enhance your value within the organization, then your best bet would be to embrace the changes and try to give the appearance that you are a team player.
Your other alternative is so simply look for a new job, or enter a LVN to RN educational program. In fact, I would ask your hospital to assist you in paying for such a program because it sounds like you really do love your job...and this would give you the opportunity to change with it. The hospital would probably require a long term comittment from you once you become an RN to offset the cost, but it sounds like you want a long term committment from them as well.
I hope this helps.
