australia nursing?
Hi everyone! I am somewhat new to nursing (2yrs as a RN) and i am thinking of going to australia for nursing for maybe 2 years or so. Can anyone tell me about australia nursing and what its like? should i wait till i have more experience? pay rate? agencies or independent?
Hi, Im from australia and im a rn1. I have worked with an agency for 2 years and now been at the same hospital for 2 years. i much prefer being at the same hospital because you get to become part of the team, get to know the policies and proceedures and the ins and outs of the hospital. what sort of area are you interested in? I am in Victoria, there are a wide range of hospitals - i am in a public hospital which specialises in womens health, gynae, obs, maternity, neonates and oncology. it is a brand new hospital, great facilities and great education. I am 2 years out and earn $46 000 grose. Its not much money but its a great job!
Hello Lani,
Nursing in Australia is very different. We don't have Nursing assistants. We look after every aspect of the patient's care ourselves. Patient load is between 4-6 during the day, and higher overnight.
Be aware that the brand names of drugs are different to yours, that the nomenclature also is different.
I think however, that travelling to another country is an invaluable experience, and though it's difficult at first, it gets easier. If you don't like it, you could always come back.
Just remember that Australians drive on the left hand side of the road, so look right first, before stepping onto the road!!
Are there US agencies that contract in Australia?
I don't know about US agencies, but you could always try enquiring yourself first. In Victoria, the Nurses Board of Victoria have a website (nbv.org.au) that addresses registration for foreign nurses. I've called them on several occasions and they're very nice.
