Living in a hotel?
I'm was talking with my recruiter about an assignment I'm interested in taking and the housing situation. She said that apartments are limited in the area because it's a small city, so they'll put me up in a hotel instead. Living in a hotel? Has anyone else ever done this while working as a travel nurse? I'd love to hear the pros and cons.

Living in Hotels
I just finished a contract in which I stayed in a hotel (Comfort Inn). While it isn't as comfortable as your house or an apartment, it does work out. Sometimes you'll even get better rates than what you'd pay or get charged for an apartment. Some negatives are that you have to pack up each time you have a break and want to travel somewhere unless of course the agency is picking up the tab for the complete contract period. My situation only required three days and I was close enough to travel home after those shifts were completed. You get people in that are noisey when you are trying to sleep. Sometimes house cleaning will be a hassel. Lastly, a hotel hasn't the room to "move-in" without it looking like a mess. Would I do it again? Probably, but only if I really wanted the position being offered.

housing in a motel
I went on a 13 week assignment and in the begining, was housed in a motel. Just as km posted, I had the same experience. Noise and mess were just some of the inconvieniences. I complained lound enough and was moved to a studio, however, I don't recommend that situation either. Keeping in mind that you are on temporary assignment, it IS 13 weeks long. Thats 3 months. Practically no room to turn around, and god forbid you have a guest. Not an situation i would recommend

Thanks so much for the replies. I really appreciate it. I've decided to go with the hotel housing because I'm really excited about the assignment. What do you mean..."god forbid you have a guest"?

Hi km,

I've lived in a hotel before during an assignment. I stayed at a Best Western for 13 weeks and it actually wasn't that bad. It's good that you're really excited about the assignment because that will make your living situation that much more tolerable.

Good luck!

As a very "seasoned" traveler.. ER nurse and have worked all over the country I have been housed in some wonderful apt. complexes... mountain resorts... extended stays and motels... Holiday Inn Express being the most recent.... Ask your recruiter to contact the hotel and have them put a fridge and microwave... most do... as far as the noise goes.. inform the motel/hotel front desk of your sleeping hours and ask for a room that does not have heavy traffic... Extended stays are certainly better than a motel room... you have to consider the length of assignment... I never work over 4 weeks at a time.. you would not believe what you can cook in a microwave!! Your other choice is to find another agency out there that will meet YOUR needs... there are too many to settle for something you do not want.... from an 8 yr. traveler... if you don't ask... you don't get it. Good luck[/b]

Hi km, Maybe it's just me, but living in a hotel doesn't sound bad at all. I'm actually considering it right now for an assignment in Orange County. I work with Access Nurses too. I've never lived without a roommate before, so I like the security of living in a hotel where there's always someone around if I need anything. Plus, room service and cleaning service!

Where is your assignment? Email me at [email protected] if you want to talk more.

thanks so much for your replies. Jules23--your positive feedback has been really helpful. I'm starting my assignment with Access Nurses and I checked out the hotel and it's gonna be great.
