About to jump in
I am about to try this for the first time, but I knew it's what I wanted when I went to RN school years ago. My youngest daughter just graduated in May and I'm ready to make the switch from my last three years as FT ICU night nurse to a traveler. I've put out a resume but got flooded and haven't called anyone back yet. I assume that everyone will say they can give me what I want (a first time assignment nearby in Dallas, an hour away) so I'm wondering how to filter out the lies from the good agencies. Fastaff and Access seem to get good reviews here. Want to get my first asignment close to home and pocket the housing money before looking towards CA and bigger bucks (have another daughter in Mountain View, CA).
Any suggestions? I have worked with an agency in the past out of Dallas that paid pretty good ($40/hr) but they didn't work very hard to get me assignments, prbably because I was already working 7 on-7 off and it was too much trouble to keep up with for them. Also worked a lot of PRN in the next town, always in ICU, always nights.
I'm glad I found this place, hope to glean a lot of insight from your brains.

Thanks for the reply!
I have talked with a number of the travelers that I've come into contact with along the way as an ICU staff nurse (and as a lab tech for the ten years or so prior to going into nursing). The tax advantages seem like another of the many pluses of traveling but I am hoping to get a good tax pro to help with that. Planning ahead is probably pretty important to get the right breaks.
I'll e-mail you later with some specific questions, but getting ready to watch the Mavs play now.
Look forward to all of this, as I mentioned; this was always the plan, to go on the road and make the big bucks while rambling the country, maybe the world.
What can be better than that?
