staffing: nurse/patient ratio
Can anyone give me some input as to how you staff your monitored units? I work in a ICU/PCU. Our ICU has 10 bedside monitors and our PCU has 8 telemetry monitors.
Out staffing is based on numbers only and not acuity, which disturbs me. Anyone out there have any suggestions or policies that you use off for patient to nurse ratios?
For every specialty in nursing, there are organizations that set the standards of care for patients with specific problems. For example, the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN), Emergency Nurses Association, Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), etc, etc, etc. Often these organizations set standards for providing care, and they include staffing ratios. Any healthcare organization that deviates from these standards is placing themselves at risk. State and federal surveyors base their surveys on these standards, and healthcare organizations can lose their certifications if they violate these standards. In addition, they place themselves at risk for lawsuits by failing to adhere to these guidelines.
I would look for assistance from these organizations in solving your problem.
