RE: new hires, and where to go
Hi, I am about to become a new grad RN, and am looking seriously about a position on either a medical or surgical floor nearby. However, my aspirations are for an OR nursing position. It is my understanding that I may want to work a year on the floor before I begin to specialize so that I can get a good grasp on floor nursing. My concern is that I will interview soon for the OR position (one just happened to open up, and I think that I was lucky to be asked), but I wonder if I should turn it down so I can get more experience. What do you think?
It's always good to get experience, but what are your long-term goals? Is the OR where you want to eventually land? And, if you do get hired in the OR, does it offer a new grad internship or special training program for you?
The OR is such a unique specialty in nursing, and floor nursing may not be the best preparation for that. If the OR is where you want to be, go for it. You can always return to floor nursing later.
I highly recommend general medicine floors to new grads. It's a mosh pit of all disease processes and gives you a basic understanding of how to approach many situations. Great learning experience.
