Quote:PONTIAC -- Three nursing home developers have submitted proposals on what to do with Livingston Manor nursing home.
The Livingston County Board nursing home committee met Wednesday to unseal proposals from Westmont-based Prism Healthcare; Management Performance Associates, based in Chesterfield, Mo.; and Good Samaritan Home, based in Flanagan.
A special committee was formed to look over the proposals and report its findings back to the committee in September. One or more of the bidders may be invited to make a presentation to the full County Board after that.
?What I would anticipate is that we would have a dialogue with a company without disqualifying any of the other candidates, but we have to get down to working with one group or else it will go on for months and months,? nursing home committee Chairman David Heath said.
Although details of the plans were not openly discussed, Heath said it appeared the proposals from Prism and Good Samaritan meet the terms in the county?s request for proposals.
The county is looking for someone to take over operations of Livingston Manor, build a new facility and transfer all current residents to that new facility. The county does not want to retain ownership of the home.
MPA?s plan calls for Livingston County to retain ownership of the home, but does provide new recommendations, said Scott Gima of MPA.
The Livingston County board originally sought proposals in November 2007, and Prism Healthcare was chosen over Pontiac-based ASTA Care in December. Prism?s plan included privatizing the nursing home and building a new facility of 121 to 131 beds.
Prism later dropped out of negotiations in February, saying the community and the board were divided on what to do with Livingston Manor.
The County Board voted later in February to close the nursing home altogether. It reversed that decision in June and sought new proposals, citing the county?s current economic conditions.
Well I suppose it's better to have a privately run home than no home at all, but private ownership of such essential services always makes me a little nervous, there's always the worry that profit will come before the home's residents in a private business, although I suppose that's exactly what the County are doing themselves; getting rid of the home due to economics (i.e. it costs too much), all pretty shoddy IMHO!
