OK-- I'll be brutally honest, as you requested. We LOVE male nurses! Men make great nurses, plus they are usually much stronger physically that females. Men in America seem to really prefer emergency room or become nurse anesthetists. Think carefully-- maybe you felt the females were ruder than males simply because YOU think of nursing as a female profession. Good luck and God Bless You, Peaches.
Thank you all for your responses.
Peaches: ]You?r right in assuming that, that I always though of nursing as a female profession. But during the open day I kept an open mind, and gave no impression of my views or anything - I just got on with it, and for my troubles I got a lot of hostility. Honest!
As man I to would prefer ER or a technical side?its more manly I suppose - pride?s a terrible thing lol
I agree its my ethnicity/faith. Sadly working in the service sector, I do get a lot of abuse. Which is mostly racially motivated, as well as, the usual rubbish from Joe Public! I blame a few idiots & the dam politicians.
On a much lighter note?I understand you female nurse may need assistance to move a heavy patients, safely! I hope you wonderful nurses don?t expect the male nurses to do all the heavy lifting, remember it?s a team effort and we all got to do our fair load.
It?s not very pc.
Hey Man Nurse, I responded to your post because I really felt that you needed to realize that no matter what peoples initial perceptions are of you, YOU can change that by just being the best Nurse that you can be. You will be respected. Don't let a few negative remarks get you down! We all come across those. Also, I live in the "Bible Belt", and where I work is a physician from Iran, he is now a Christian, however, very few know this of him. He may have suffered prejudice in the beginning, but his expertice and beautiful heart took care of that.

I have not noticed descrimination with male nurses. I would venure to guess that it is your ethnicticity and possible your religion. If this is the case, I would remind people that though you are Islam, your failth is in God. Am I correct?(God being only a different name for the same creator?) The creator does not change, only our perception of him changes. Maybe this would be a good opportunity to explain this to people, with-out getting into huge debates(there is probably not enough time for that!) Because of all of the terrorism that is linked to the Muslim faith, there is obviously a sore spot there. However, how many of those who are anti-Muslim, are Catholic? Look at the IRA in Ireland. Look at what horrible things man has done all through history in the name of religion. I myself am of the Christian faith. I believe Jesus came to take away the fear that man had toward the Creator, and to exhibit to us the Love, compassion and mercy. There was a very rational reason for this. However, our Creator is multi-faceted, it may be that many religions together portray hime for what he is. It is not my place to judge. The spirit of a person is all that we should see. Let your faith guide you, and keep your heart open to your Creator who speaks to you. Don't allow people to lead you in the wrong direction or make you feel inferior. If you want to be a nurse because you want to help others, no matter what faith you have learned to have allegiance, the true Creator will honor that in you. Don't worry about the other blind spirited people who want to take that away from you.
