ROME, Italy (CNN) -- Pope John Paul II, hospitalized since Thursday and unable to speak since undergoing a tracheotomy, appeared briefly in the window of his hospital room Sunday and blessed crowds gathered in St. Peter's Square for the traditional Angelus blessing.
