Student needing help....
I am having a major problem. I am currently a college student. I have not been admitted to the Nursing program yet, but I am a bit indecisive. In the last 2 months I keep flipping back and forth between Nursing and Education; I wanted to be a teacher but things are not looking good, I found out that the job outlook in the area I live is not good; some people go up to 2 yrs without finding a job, then I tried to become a CNA, and had problems with the skills; I did GREAT on the book work, so I don't know if I can do Nursing. I had a lot of trouble dealing with the bed pans and bathing Perineal care....HELP!!! Is that normal to feel weird and to think you can't do that? I just want to finish something soon, I have been in school for 3 yrs and have nothing to show for it. I know that job security in KY is good so I dunno what to do or if I can get over the poop issues!!! HELP!!!
There are other options to nursing that you won't really have to deal with bedpans or bedbaths. Surgery centers, outpatient clinics, doctor's offices, ect. Some things I think you get more comfortable with in time. I was terrified of vents, but was the only night nurse on the floor with 34 residents, 2 of which were on vents. I was a wreck about it at first, but in time it didn't bother me. I'm no longer at that facility, but having the vent experience helped me get the job I have now.
Eventually you could get into teaching. Around here (Ohio) they are always advertising for clinical instructors.
Heather has a point...if you think you could manage to deal with "poop" long enough to get through clinicals there are plenty of other nursing opportunities available. You also have to ask yourself if bedpans/bedbaths bother you, what about giving someone an injection or emptying drains that have other bodily fluids in them(blood)......its alot to consider before entering into a nursing program. Just "picking something" to just get finished isn't the best way to look at things....I've been going to school off and on for years and I understand how you feel, but do you really want to make a hasty decision?? Honestly, I wish I could've only spent 3 yrs of my life in school and then figured out what it was I wanted to do or even had the time to do it that quickly....I was on what I call "the 100 yr plan".
