1. Eyes wandering; looking away
2. Maintaining eye contact, but not really listening
3. Doing something else while someone is talking to you
4. Chatting with a coworker while customer is waiting
5. Allowing interruptions by any and all people or calls
6. Allowing an important interruption without excusing yourself and explaining
7. Acting tired, bored or distracted
8. Looking at your watch
9. Interrupting the person talking
10. Turning your back without apologizing or explaining
11. Walking away with no explanation or goodbye
Help your team enhance nursing communication through the pivotal practice of presence. Ask them to experiment with a small number of patients and family members. Then set a date to discuss the results.
