I have question as I am about to start college...
So I am about to begin my pre reqs for the nursing program I want to get into, and I am thinking about my specialty. I always wanted to do neonatal nursing but feared it would be very depressing and would be high stress because you are responsible for all the babies in the nursery. Is there a difference between a nurse who works in the nursery and one who works on the floor where the mothers are after the babies are born, just checking in on the mothers and babies in their rooms? I apologize if this is a stupid question, but thanks in advance.

OB nursing is often broken into three different specialties, labor and delivery - where mom goes into labor and baby is born, newborn nursery - where the babies stay until discharge, and post-partum - where the moms stay after giving birth. Some hospitals have LDRP units, where the mom gives birth and stays until discharge all in the same room, some have mom/baby units where mom and baby room in together and the nurse takes care of both. It depends on your job description. Nurses in the newborn nursery aren't responsible for all the babies in the nursery just as nurses on the floor aren't responsible for a whole unit full of adult patients. Just because babies are little people doesn't mean they have any less issues or need any less care.

Good luck with getting your pre-reqs done!
